Citizens Charter


Animal Husbandry sector plays a vital role in agriculture based rural economy. The activities mainly constitute dairying, sheep rearing, goat rearing, piggery and poultry keeping. Although the activities remain traditional particularly in rural India, the process of liberalization and reforms under scientific advancement have made way for private small and big entrepreneurs to invest in this sector.


Sustainable growth of livestock, poultry and small ruminants or nutritional security and economical prosperity.


Conservation and development of animal genetic resources and breed development accelerated productivity.


  • Identification of Bacterial and Viral diseases, treatment to ailing animals and free vaccination program for animals.
  • Improvement of cattle and buffaloe breeds through animal husbandry services.
  • Making provision for availability of improved breed lambs and piglets.
  • Educating farmers about the various developments of the department by Extension and Training.
  • Supply of Minikets and Rootslips to farmers and help them seasonally produce necessary fodder based on their needs.
  • Taking necessary steps to provide healthcare services and supply fodder during natural calamities or disasters.



  • Prevent, control, eradicate animal diseases and provide diagnostic, therapeutic & veterinary services.
  • Development of Feed and Fodder along with Quality Control.
  • Development of cattle, buffaloes, small ruminants, poultry and piggery.
  • Increase milk, meat & egg production with quality assurance.
  • Provide assistance to livestock, poultry farmers & entrepreneurs.
  • Improve livestock production technologies.
  • Encourage hygienic production system, processing and marketing milk, meat & eggs.
  • Establish Quality Control/Certification units for milk meat & eggs.
  • Promote Research & Developmental activities in Animal ,Veterinary & Dairy sciences.
  • Strengthening extension education activities.
  • Conservation and development of native breeds along with genetic mapping.
  • Establishing/strengthening Veterinary Institutions with focus on backward area.
  • Socio-economic programs for SC, ST, OBC and women through animal husbandry activities.



The Department is responsible for matters relating to livestock production, preservation, protection and improvement of livestock and dairy development, formulation of policies, programs and implementation in the field of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Veterinary Services. The main focus of the activities is on:

  • Development of requisite infrastructure in the State for improving animal productivity.
  • Promoting infrastructure for handling, processing and marketing of milk and milk products.
  • Conservation and development of native breeds.
  • Preservation and protection of livestock through provision of animal healthcare.
  • Strengthening of livestock Farms for development of superior gemplasm.
  • Capacity building and human resource development.
  • Research & development activities.
  • Promote animal welfare activities.
  • Implement Socio-economic programs.

  • Karnataka Veterinary, Animal & FIsheries Sciences University (KVAFSU): Organization providing basic Veterinary Education to graduates, conducting Research in the field of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry and providing technical knowhow.
  • Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF): Milk produces cooperative apex body for dairy development activities in the State providing accurate and enumerative prize for the milk and milk products.
  • Institute for Animal Health & Veterinary Biologocals (IAH&VB): Aimed for production of vaccines for control of bacterial and viral diseases affecting Livestock and Poultry.
  • Karnataka Sheep & Wool Development Coproration (KSWDC): Co-operative sheep and wool producers organization aimed for sheep and goat development in Karnataka through cross breeding and upgradation of local breeds.
  • Karnataka Cooperative Poultry Federation (KCPF): Co-operative institution organized to generate employment of educated rural youth through Poultry rearing, marketing of Giriraja birds and providing financial assistance to interested farmers.


  • State Level Administration: Commissioner, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is the Head Of the Department at State level. Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is the Technical Head and functions under the Commissioner, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
  • District Level Administration: Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services heads the District level administration. District and Taluk level administration functions under the concerned District Zilla Panchayats.
  • Taluk Level Administration: Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is the head of Taluk level administration of the department.


Effective Grievances Redressal Mechanism

Commissioner/Director at State level, District Deputy Directors at various District level, concerned Assistant Directors at Taluk level or designated Nodal Officers will take necessary action in addressing to the grievances of livestock owners and general public.
